CVS is coming back!

It’s extremely obvious that CVS wants Seminole Heights! The questions is how bad. There was an article in the newspaper quoting CVS / Developers as they plan to go before city council.

  1. My thoughts? I hope city council’s staff don’t help to kill it this time around with the FBZ crap. Let them build and they will come regardless of what the damn outside looks like. I want to see this business in the hood sooner than later or never.

  2. Oh, well that’s the final word then. #1 wants to take it however CVS wants to give it. Thus it shall be. End of story. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

  3. Great, no character, no charm. No way CVS. What’s wrong with you, I say make them conform. Please. I thought we all lived here because we like the charm and character of the neighborhood. If you want CVS, I’m sure there are 150 to choose from, go move next to one. I for one am not in favor of a big box on any corner that looks like a big box. Get your head out of the sand.

  4. #1 likely lived here before there was charm and character. Other than what he/she sees in the mirror of course.

  5. It’s funny how the CVS was to give a different reason every time they speak as to why the building couldn’t be moved any further.

At City Council it was if we moved it forward we’d have to change the footprint of the building and we can’t do that. Another footprint won’t be profitable.

Now the article says it’s due to the drive thrus and pedestrian parking.

If this building goes in as a currently proposed you can kiss goodbye any potential for postitive redevelopment on that part of Nebraska. The building will set the tone that the status que is here to stay. And let’s not forget all the fine upstanding citizens from East Hillsborough Ave. that will come to this store because there isn’t one down that way.

  6. Wait.
I thought the place had the “charm and character” to begin with and that’s why people moved here.
Now I see #4 saying that it didn’t have “charm and character” before.
Maybe #4 thinks of themselves as a “Charming Character” we should all be honored to have in our presence.

  7. Apples and oranges y’all. Charm and character has not been a feature of the commercial corridors in a long, long time. Perhaps that is what #4 was meaning. #1 and #6 please tell us when you moved here, what did the commercial corridors look like? Have they been improving recently or do you even care?

  8. Thanks 7, but even the residential areas weren’t that aesthetically charming during much of the 70’s and 80’s with the era of burglar bars and haphazard development. Though really many of the people who have lived here throughout the decades really are charming characters once you get past the constant conflict these things cause. 1 probably is no exception outside the veil of anonymity.

  9. Exactly #7, but it doesn’t mean we can’t move in a more positive direction of charm and character. SH has been a struggling community since they put the interstate through which included tearing down one of the most beautiful historic libraries in the city. So can we please not mess up the neighborhood by setting precedent with a big box and act like we are desparate men without a date. pretty please.

  10. I vote to stand our ground on this one. I am irked at CVS for taking away any concessions that they had already agreed to. To me it is them snubbing the neighborhood and saying. “Fine, you want to play hardball, let us show you how a multi-million dollar company can squash your neighborhood” I am disgusted with their unfriendly neighborhood attitude. To me, I say frick them and lets move on. Evidently they have many studies showing how profitable that location would be. I say we take that information to Walgreen’s and get them to build there. Wasn’t Walgreens looking in that area previously? After the first round I moved my prescriptions from CVS MLK to Walgreen’s MLK. While my $500+ per month may not put them out of business, collectively we could put a dent in their wallet. Until this fiasco I had exclusively shopped CVS. It will take a lot to get me back in their stores. What they are wanting to build will be there for generations. I want it done right.

  11. Oh snap looks like Kenny’s back.

  12. The don’t care about the neighborhood, it’s all lip service. That chick from South Tampa summed how CVS viewed the area at the very first meeting, it’s a bad neighborhood, and the baby mamas want to park right by the door. Nothing else really mattered. Sure, we will end up with another Advance Auto style building, but by God at least we won’t have to drive an extra 15 blocks for our scripz.

  13. Why do we need CVS? What benefit will Seminole Heights gain by having CVS there? Is getting rid of a car lot to build a building that attracts those dependent on medicaid, medicare and free insurance a benefit for the neighborhood?

  14. With this site plan we aren’t getting rid of a car lot, just converting it to one with a rapid turnover.

  15. I have to agree with #10. This really comes off as a, “We’ll get that location come h*ll or high-water” action from CVS.

And, “Webb said CVS would meet with residents to discuss the project, including building design, but wanted to wait until the city’s planning staff reached its decision.” Really? Just what exactly can they alter once the city’s planning staff gives its ok? I for one highly doubt CVS plans on getting the standard suburban big-box plan approved and then swapping it out for the previous “compromise” plan.

  16. When is the hearing? We need to organize and come up with a conducive argument against any zoning waivers they are requesting, we need to continue to site chapters from the Comp Plan that the planned CVS does not meet the character of the neighborhood, and there is a bunch of other criteria that I’m believing they will not meet. If we organize and go before council we still have a shot. I’ve lived here a long time and somehow slow change suits me fine. Don’t need the traffic congestion, nor Corp CVS snooty nose looking down on me. I’ll take my money elsewhere too. We need to support small business if possible. Wish Rose was still around.

What does the city have to say?

  17. Didn’t the article say there isn’t going to be a hearing? What can we do to stop this, email the city staff? I know that if it is constructed as proposed I will not support it and I will tell others the story to encourage them not to support it.

  18. Can Big Blue put up a post to vote Yeah or Nay for CVS. The blogger could erase any duplicate IP addresses. This may give a sample count as to how many people support or oppose the CVS Plan. If those that oppose the plan far out weigh those who support we could then email City council and zoning a much stronger statement asking that any plan be denied.

  19. Great idea 18
But what if the supporters outnumber those that oppose it?

  20. The only way to get a pubic hearing on CVS (other than the wetzoning hearing) is for the zoning department to deny one of the administrative variances (e.g. drive-thru). Then CVS would have to appeal that decision to City Council.

  21. Has anyone heard if OSHNA has a position on the new site plan for CVS?

  22. Sounds like there was an attempt to compromise but folks shot it down. I guess they prefer their car lots and derelict apartments.

  23. I for one prefer the “car lots and derelict apartments” since I know their days are numbered. I would rather suffer through 3 or 5 years of those versus decades of a ill built CVS!

  24. I second that 23. It’s just a matter of time for those businesses.

  25. #21 Yes, I think that position is known as “a day late and a dollar short.”

  26. Please visit the city site and send letters to City Council. Object to the drive thru and the APS (alcohol package sales). Just what we need, another alcohol outlet to litter the scenery. I will not support it and neither will anyone I know, not the current plan. They really did slap SH in the face with their ha ha ha, we’re coming back and putting one in using the current zoning.

  27. 23 – that is the same tired argument I heard 9 years ago when I moved here. How much longer do you expect every one to wait? Take off your blinders.

  28. 27 If you don’t notice the positive changes that have taken place in the past 9 years, you need to take your blinders off.

  29. Funny people. Moan, groan, gripe about no development. Then have the opportunity to have development and reject a compromise. Then it is the bad old CVS.

The real problem is too many so called adults who act like petchulant, indulged 5 year olds who never learned to share or play nice together.

My vote will be for CVS, when is the hearing so I can bring my neighbors!

  30. Reading comprehension problem there pops? There is no public hearing. Those who spoke against the halfhearted concessions have stated numerous times they’d rather wait for positive, compatible development than bend over and take the craptastic box in an ocean of asphalt. How about you follow along, do we need to print you off a program so you can keep track, or shall we just expect that you’ll continue bring nothing but impertinent drivel to the conversation?

  31. Really, we don’t need another pharmacy. There is not far to go to any Walgreens or CVS to get a script. What is really lacking in SH is a pet supply store. I have to go to Carrolwood or Westshore just to get my dog food and toys! Why hasn’t Petco, Petsmart or Petsupermarket looked into pet friendly SH?
That and a Health Food store, it could all be on that corner that is waiting to be developed.

  32. I agree with 29. Funny people aside, welcome the CVS and let it be for cripe’s sake. If they bend to allow a more historic look then great, if not then whatever we have another drug store choice in the hood other than one further away. Bring it in CVS and Thanks for coming back !

  33. 31 doesn’t need or want another pharmacy so therefore….go elsewhere
31 wants a pet supply store so he/she wants a petco, petsmart, etc. or health food store therefore… come here

It would seem only what #31 wants is what matters. We had a health food store 10 years ago, it failed because the health food crowd still went elsewhere to shop. How many pet stores have closed in the past 2 years. Maybe that is why.

or maybe it is just their studies show a very fickle and brittle demographic in Seminole Heights.

My vote is redevelopment of that corner. I’ll support CVS or anyone else who will improve the appearance of that location.

  34. Lack of patronage at the Sligh location is not why Ansley’s closed. That store performed fine. The entire chain folded.

  35. Ansley’s closed because the person who bought the “business” ran it into the ground by selling off all the product and never replacing it and bailed. I think that was the plan from the get go. Ansley’s was bamboozeld by this guy. They then sold the property.

  36. Awww 35 & 35, there you go introducing facts into this discussion. Those have no place here. Only scare tactics and insults are welcome.

  37. We fight so hard to keep crime down, to keep the prostitutes at bay, to keep the drug dealers out of the area, to restore the glory of our homes, to keep the historic uniqueness of the neighborhood together. Why would we settle for suburbia development that doesn’t embrace the vision we’re fighting for? Because of years of poor zoning choices and lack of vision we’ve become the city’s dumping ground, for non desireables such as transition housing, pay here car lots and warehouses. We have an opportunity to change that tone, why would you settle for suburbia CVS and perpetuate what we’ve been fighting against for the past 20 years?

  38. I think we need a pet store and vitamin/health food store too.

  39. Because look around, this is Seminole Heights for goodness sakes. We have hookers, pimps and drug dealers at the bus stops. We’re littered with ho motels. We still need junkyard dogs and razor wire. We should be thankful for any developer willing to take a chance in our neighborhood. No one wants to build here so beggars cant be choosers. The Walgreens at MLK doesn’t look so bad, so why should I have to drive another couple of blocks to pick up my meds or a greeting card? You people are so damn uppity.

  40. Wow CVS has to be #39 that whole comment is a reitteration of CVS’s speech when they first presented to the neighborhood last fall.

Please since we’re such a horrible disgusting place do us a favor and take your ass elsewhere.

  41. CVS wanting to move here doesn’t make us lucky. It means we means they think they can be profitable here.

We are lucky that Ella’s, Independent, Bistro, Sherry’s YesterDaze, Reservervations, D&D Antiques, Refinery, Smokin A’s, El Sevilliano, Tampa Street Market etc. selected to open or move their shops to Seminole Heights. All of those places add to the vision and we are lucky to have them because they add value to the neighborhood and are good people/neighbors.

  42. All those mentioned by 41 came here thinking it would NOT be profitable?
I’d think part of any vision they had would be to make a profit.

  43. Which local pharmacy would you like to open here to take the place of CVS?

  44. Hey Rose, how ’bout another go at Rose Drugs?
